Semaglutide for Weight Control

What is semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist. This mimics the action of the natural hormone GLP-1 in the body. GLP-1 is produced by the intestine in response to food, and it stimulates the release of insulin. This helps to lower blood sugar levels. Semaglutide is administered as a once per week injection, and it has been shown to reduce body weight, improve blood sugar control, and lower the risk of cardiovascular events.

How does Semaglutide work?

Semaglutide works for weight loss by reducing appetite and increasing feelings of fullness or satiety. It is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which means that it mimics the action of the natural hormone GLP-1 in the body. GLP-1 is produced by the intestine in response to food and it stimulates the release of insulin. This helps lower blood sugar levels. GLP-1 delays the emptying of the stomach and reduces food intake by increasing feelings of fullness.

In addition to these effects, semaglutide also acts on areas of the brain that regulate food intake and appetite. Specifically, it activates neurons in the hypothalamus, which regulates the area of the brain resposable for hunger and satiety. This leads to a decrease in appetite and food intake, which can help people to lose weight.

Overall, the combination of these effects makes semaglutide an effective tool for weight loss in adults with obesity or overweight. It is especially effective when combined with a nutritious diet and regular exercise routine.

Is Semaglutide safe?

Semaglutide has been shown to be safe and well-tolerated in clinical studies. However, there are potential side effects that need to be considered. The most frequent side effects of semaglutide include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which can occur in the first few weeks of treatment but usually improve over time.

Has semaglutide been aproved by the FDA?

Yes, Semaglutide has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for weight management in adults. This medication is administered once per week and is designed to be used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Semaglutide is the first weightloss medication to be approved by the FDA in over a decade.

How is semaglutide aministered?

Semaglutide is administered as a subcutaneous injection (under the skin) once a week at either of our Woodlands or Katy locations. The small insulin needle is inserted under the skin in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Semaglutide should be taken at the same time each week, and it can be taken with or without food.

How long before I see results?

The length of time it takes to see results from semaglutide can vary depending on individual factors such as the person's starting weight, diet, exercise habits, and other health conditions. In clinical trials, people who took semaglutide for weight management typically saw significant weight loss within the first few months of treatment.

Please note that individual results may vary, and that weight loss may not be seen in every person who takes semaglutide. Additionally, weight loss may plateau after a certain point, and it is important for patients to continue to follow a healthy diet and exercise program in order to maintain their weight loss over time.
